Food For Thought (11-5-08)

Use these questions on your own or with a friend to help you apply Wednesday night’s message to your life.

What does being foolish mean to you?

The Webster definition for foolish is resulting from or showing a lack of sense; ill-considered; unwise.

It’s interesting to note that being wise is an antonym of being foolish.

Tonight’s message was about how our choices determine our destinaiton.  How do you see that in your own life?

Mike asked the question tonight “have you ever done something that you regret?”  Come up with one and think about all of the things that led up to that decision.  If we look closely enough we can see that there are many choices along the way that lead up to some disastrous decisions; just like King David in 2 Samuel 11. Go ahead and read through that story and look at the many times that David makes mistakes. (Hint: verse 1)

One of the points Mike made tonight was “As you make choices, don’t ask , is there anything ‘wrong with this’?”  How does that question become a slippery slope?  How have you seen this in your life?  How can you keep from this?  How have you learned from a bad decision in your past?

Mike then told us about how we can’t trust our feelings.  Why is this so?

The last point that Mike made was to rescue yourself from choices that you will regret.  How can you be more aware of regretful decisions in your life? Who can you go to in a time of distress or temptation?

Summer Camp 2009

We’re already looking ahead to next summer’s camp. Each year we take students to Hume San Diego. You can check out what our summer camp is like here. In the meantime, help us figure out the best date to head to camp next year by taking our nifty little poll.

Hume San Diego (Day 4)

Today was a great day at camp.  It was my first day back after leaving on Sunday.   Here are some of the highlights of the day:

  • The girls built a giant cow mascot for their team.
  • Bunch of students played some AirSoft and got out their aggressions by shooting each other.
  • Some of the guys had some fun with the frisbee.
  • Darrin (our camp speaker) taught on the Doctrine of the Church.  Good stuff.
  • Many of the students have shared that God is doing some great things in their life.
  • As I type this (at 11:57pm) the guys are reciting memory verses to earn extra points for our team.

It’s been a great week so far.  Tomorrow we’ll be taking 10 of us to downtown San Diego to participate in some urban ministry.  Pray for us as we finish up our last full day of camp!

Hume SD (Day 2)

Good day ya’ll! Today has been fabulous one; full of cheering, worship, euro bungee(ing??), and all of the usual crazy youth stuff! All of the students have been really enjoying themselves at camp; from worship and services to free time. If you didn’t know already the camp is on PLNU’s (Point Loma Nazarene University) campus in San Diego, which is pretty much right on the beach. So you can imagine how unlucky we all are.

The message this week is about the essentials in Christianity. Last night the message was about the Doctrine of God. Tonight we dove into the Doctrine of man and sin. The speaker did an excellent job of showing us all how deficient we are without God. Showing us all that we are powerless on our own (Romans 3). The whole week is centered around emphasizing the basic truths in Christianity to build our foundation of faith.

There have been quite a few highlights of the day. At camp we have a rec time. This is where the students go crazy (I mean CRAZY!) and do a bunch of relays and games. Some of the girls are on a team called the Robocows (the theme is very robotic). They had a great first day at rec and their team is in first place! So go them! Well not really, we all know the guys team, the Smashbots, are going to come back and upset the whole field! We shouldn’t get into that too much though. Besides all of this nutty stuff, it has been great to watch a bunch of students flip around on the euro bungee, tough out the bull ride, and even eat spaghetti without any silverware…be afraid, be very afraid. Well we are looking forward to a great rest of the week. Tomorrow I’ll make sure to fire up some photos for you guys so you can see all the action. I forgot to grab the cameras from the girls to get there photos from them. So sit back relax and enjoy the plethora photos that will be coming your way tomorrow!

Hume: San Diego (Day 1)

We got to Pt. Loma around 4:30 or so yesterday afternoon. Got everyone settled in the dorms and had dinner. Then there was a FANTASTIC opener complete with dancing robots, lasers, smoke, and bubbles. Yeah, you kinda had to be there.

I headed back home last night so I can go to a doctor’s appointment with Nicole this week. I’m planning on heading back Wednesday morning to catch the last couple days of camp. Ben will be posting photos and updates here.

Summer Camp Update

If you’re going to camp with us, we had hoped to get info packets with the fun detailed information out in the mail today, but something came up that delayed that. So, the packets will be mailed on Monday instead. Watch your mailbox!

If you haven’t signed up and would still like to go, we do still have some space. I’ve talked with some students already who are interested in the spots, but let me know if you’d like in and we’ll see what we can do.
